WALES INTERACTIVE - 2018 REVIEW OF THE YEAR
What an amazing year, it’s been another very successful 12 months for our studio. This year has seen our FMV titles, Late Shift, The Bunker, The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker and The Shapeshifting Detective achieving over a million downloads collectively. This has helped establish ourselves as one of the driving forces behind the ‘rebirth’ of the FMV genre and we’ll continue blurring the lines between film and games even more over the next few years with some very exciting titles to come. As well as our FMV titles we actually launched 8 multi-platform titles on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, PSVR, Oculus and Vive throughout 2018. These include our 8 Nintendo Switch titles, 4 PS4, 4 Xbox One, 4 PC, 4 Mac and 2 boxed titles. That helped us achieve a huge company milestone by reaching three million downloads of our collective portfolio! These titles include the new FMV games The Shapeshifting Detective (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac) and The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker (PS4, Xbox One, Switch), VR action shooting title Time Carnage (PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, Oculus) as well as Moonfall Ultimate (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac), Late Shift (Switch), The Bunker (Switch), Coffin Dodgers (Switch) and Typoman (Switch). Added to that are our two physical releases, the PS4 Limited Run Boxed Edition of Late Shift and the PS4 boxed retail release of Time Carnage.
We’ve also been fortunate to win some great accolades this year. This year’s recognition includes winning the BAFTA Cymru Game Award 2018 for Late Shift, a Wales Technology Award 2018 for International Impact and Ambassador of the Year 2018 at the Wales Online Awards. We also picked up a whole of host of nominations including Publishing Hero in the Develop Awards 2018, Best Indie Publisher in the MCV Awards 2018, Best Arcade Game in the TIGA Game Industry Awards 2018 and a Creative Industries Entrepreneurs’ nomination in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2018. Our MD also had the amazing honour of being appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire - MBE - in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2018 for “services to the video games industry”.
We are fortunate enough to do quite bit of traveling to different gaming events every year and 2018 was no different with us visiting a number of shows. There is one trip in particular that really stands out this year as we travelled to America to be part of the first ever standalone Wales stand at Game Developers Conference San Francisco 2018. It was a real honour to be representing our country at the inaugural Wales Pavilion Stand which gave Welsh Games Companies an important platform to be visible and shine on the international stage. It proved to be a big success for us, as well demoing our latest games we had some great meetings and secured some important deals for the future growth of our studio.
Our Indie Game Publishing Label continues to flourish as we work with some of the most talented indie games developers across the globe including D’Avekki Studios, Fishcow, CTRL Movie and Team Junkfish to get their games to a wider audience. We've been fortunate to collaborate the with some great people on a variety of games and we look forward to working with even more to help bring their original creations to new platforms in 2019 and beyond!
As well as third-party titles, our latest in-house “Triple-I” project, Maid of Sker, a visually stunning first-person horror game influenced by Welsh folklore, will release on all major platforms in 2019. This will be our flagship title, developed by our BAFTA Cymru award-winning team and as well as a digital release it will also be available as a multi-platform global boxed retail release. Maid of Sker will push the boundaries of what people expect from our studio and will reinforce our ambition to become one of the UK’s leading independent games developer and publishers’.
Here’s wishing you all a Happy Christmas & New Year from myself and the Wales Interactive Team.
